The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) welcomes the release of the Mid-Term Review of the 2025 Festive Season Road Safety statistics by the Minister of Transport, Ms Barbara Creecy. We note the reduction in fatal crashes and fatalities recorded during the first half of this festive season.

The reported 20.9% decrease in fatal crashes and 20.8% reduction in fatalities demonstrates that coordinated law enforcement, education and stakeholder cooperation are beginning to have an impact. However, the continued loss of life on our roads remains a serious concern, particularly as peak travel days are still ahead.

As the primary provider of public transport, the taxi industry recognises its responsibility in protecting commuters. Through the Hlokomela Road Safety Campaign, SANTACO continues to emphasise vehicle roadworthiness, driver discipline, fatigue management and compliance with traffic regulations, while encouraging passengers to prioritise safe travel behaviour.

SANTACO supports decisive enforcement actions aimed at removing unroadworthy vehicles and addressing permit violations, noting that safety on the roads requires shared accountability from all road users. The high proportion of pedestrian fatalities further highlights the need for sustained behavioural change and community-focused road safety education.

As the festive season continues, SANTACO calls on taxi operators, drivers and commuters to exercise patience, responsibility and care on the roads. Every journey must end safely.
