The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the nine people who tragically lost their lives in a road accident on the R61 between Engcobo and Cofimvaba in the Eastern Cape. We also wish those who sustained injuries a speedy and full recovery.

It is reported that the accident occurred earlier today and involved a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a passenger vehicle, with a private bakkie also reportedly involved.

SANTACO Eastern Cape representative, Mr Mzwandile Nkewana who also attended the incident scene, has confirmed that the minibus taxi was travelling from Ngcobo towards Cofimvaba, while the passenger vehicle was travelling from Cofimvaba towards Ngcobo. Both vehicles were servicing the Beyele locality.

SANTACO President, Mr Abnar Tsebe, has also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the affected families and extended his wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured. He has urged all taxi drivers to remain vigilant at all times, emphasising the responsibility that comes with transporting large numbers of passengers. President Tsebe continuous to urge drivers to avoid fatigue at all times and for all drivers to continuously take breaks and rest.

SANTACO calls on all road users to exercise patience, caution, and responsibility, especially during this festive period. The loss of life on our roads is tragic and unacceptable, and collective effort is required to ensure safer travel for all.
